Spanish spoken, English subtitles
2020-ongoing
Through an unstable mise-en-scène –somewhere between a nightly television news show and a web tutorial– Sol Negro presents different technical and cultural aspects about a linguistic phenomenon usually called «Neutral Spanish».
The staging emulates a lesson aimed at Spanish speakers willing to upgrade their native speech production to Neutral Spanish. Based on a historical review of the mechanisms of production and distribution of images and language, ideas of «authenticity» and «nativeness» are pitted against notions of «efficiency» and «distinction».
By exploring the relationships between aesthetics, linguistics and ideology, Sol Negro tries to underscore the political dimensions of everyday speech, and its impact on the ambient discourses that permeate the social landscape.
